How it scared people
The vibe
Barker adapts himself: a puzzle box, a skinless lover in the attic, and Cenobites who treat agony as connoisseurship. The S&M-tinged mythology was genuinely new for 1987 and still feels transgressive — desire as the door horror walks through.
