How it scared people
The vibe
Hideaki Anno's real subject is meetings — endless rooms of officials with on-screen name cards, unable to agree on a legal definition for the thing destroying Tokyo. It's a post-Fukushima satire with teeth, and Godzilla is redesigned as something genuinely wrong: dead eyes, split throat, a body still visibly mutating. The night sequence is apocalyptic.
