The vibe
A rubber ball bouncing down a staircase should not be able to do this much damage, but Peter Medak stages it so patiently you'll never trust one again. George C. Scott grounds the haunting in fresh grief rather than fright, and the seance sequence — automatic writing, then the tape played back afterward — is the best-built scare of its decade.
