The vibe
Jeremy Irons plays both Mantle twins so precisely that the split-screen stops registering, and Cronenberg spends the film on drug haze and co-dependence rather than shock. The gynecological instruments for operating on mutant women are the image everyone cites, but the real horror is watching two people who share one personality try to survive being separated. Devastating and very cold.
