How it scared people
The vibe
Carpenter's Lovecraft film in everything but name: a bestselling horror novelist whose fiction is rewriting the world, and an insurance investigator too smug to notice he's a character in it. Sam Neill's slow disintegration is the best acting in any Carpenter picture. Hobb's End arrives via a road that keeps handing you the same bicycle. Badly underrated.
