What if Murnau's Nosferatu looked that convincing because the studio hired an actual vampire? The joke is played entirely straight, and Willem Dafoe disappears into Max Schreck — rodent teeth, fussy little hands, the pathos of a creature who mostly wants to talk about how lonely immortality is. Malkovich's Murnau is the real monster here.
