How it scared people

The vibe

Christopher Lee gets barely a dozen lines and doesn't need them — Hammer's Dracula is a physical performance, all bloodshot eyes and lunging speed, the first vampire to arrive in colour and bleed properly. Terence Fisher stages the sunrise finale with Peter Cushing sprinting along a table, and Bray Studios' cardboard budget somehow never shows.
