How it scared people

The vibe

There's no musical score — Hitchcock replaced it with electronic bird noise built on a Trautonium, so the silences do the work. Get past the first-hour flirtation and you reach the schoolhouse jungle gym filling up behind Tippi Hedren's back, one of the great pieces of visual patience in the medium. Nothing is ever explained, which is the point.
