How it scared people

The vibe

The best fifteen minutes are the first fifteen, before you see anything: a mute little girl wandering the New Mexico desert, a trailer ripped open in the sand, and that chittering on the wind. Once the giant ants arrive they're rubber, but Gordon Douglas plays it as a straight-faced police procedural, which is why it works.
