How it scared people

The vibe

Nothing is ever shown. A door bulges inward as though something enormous is leaning on it, a sound travels the length of a corridor, and Julie Harris narrates her own unraveling in a voice already half gone. Robert Wise built Hill House out of wide-angle distortion so the architecture itself feels wrong — still the case for the unseen.
