The vibe
There is a tentacled thing in a barn in rural Mexico that gives people the best sex of their lives and then, eventually, doesn't. Escalante won Venice's directing prize for grafting Lovecraft onto a stone-faced social drama about machismo and homophobia — the register never shifts, which is exactly what makes it unnerving. Divisive on purpose.
