How it scared people
The vibe
A whole English village drops unconscious mid-afternoon, and weeks later every woman of childbearing age is pregnant — a premise Wyndham's novel plays straight and Rilla films with unnerving calm. The children are platinum-blond, unblinking and collectively telepathic, and George Sanders plays their tutor with exactly the weary politeness the material needs. The eyes still work.
