How it scared people

The vibe

The USSR classed horror as decadent, so this got through as folklore — Gogol, therefore culture. A seminary student is locked in a country chapel three nights running with a dead witch, and Ptushko's practical effects turn the last night into a parade of homemade monstrosities, including one that needs help lifting its own eyelids.
