How it scared people

The vibe

Hollywood spent the 1930s treating ghosts as gags to be explained away in the last reel. This one plays it straight: a brother and sister buy a cliff-top house in Cornwall cheap, and the house starts sobbing before dawn. Victor Young's main theme was so lovely it got lyrics two years later and became "Stella by Starlight."
