How it scared people
The vibe
Camp is the whole strategy here: Ernest Thesiger's Dr. Pretorius keeps tiny people in bell jars and toasts "a new world of gods and monsters" over gin, while James Whale films the monster's loneliness straight. Elsa Lanchester's Bride is on screen barely three minutes and owns the century, hiss and all.
