How it scared people
The vibe
Nearly every rule you think you know about werewolves — silver, wolfsbane, the pentagram, the rhyming verse — was invented by screenwriter Curt Siodmak for this film and then absorbed into folklore by mistake. Lon Chaney Jr. plays it as a big sad man who cannot stop apologizing, which is more moving than frightening.
