How it scared people

The vibe

Karloff spends roughly one scene in bandages; the rest of the time he's Ardath Bey, a soft-spoken antiquarian with parchment skin and a stare doing the work of a monster suit. Karl Freund shot Dracula before he directed this, and it shows — the scariest thing here is a man walking slowly out of frame while someone laughs himself insane.
