How it scared people
The vibe
Del Toro spent decades trying to make this, and it shows in the wrong way — every frame over-decorated, the sympathy for the Creature arriving pre-packaged rather than earned. Jacob Elordi is the reason to watch: buried under prosthetics, he plays the thing as newly born, all confusion and hurt. Beautiful, bloated, and completely sincere.
