How it scared people
The vibe
The premise is a joke — a teenager's new neighbour is a vampire and nobody believes him — and Tom Holland plays it completely straight, which is why it works. Roddy McDowall's washed-up horror host, forced to actually be the hero he plays on TV, is the sweetest performance in eighties horror. The melting effects go on gloriously long.
