How it scared people
The vibe
Kinski sat four hours a day for the bald skull and the rat teeth, and Herzog then tried to release eleven thousand grey-dyed rats in Delft, whose council said absolutely not. What came out is less a monster movie than a dirge — a vampire visibly exhausted by his own immortality, Popol Vuh moaning underneath.
