How it scared people
The vibe
The opening execution — an iron mask lined with spikes, fitted to Barbara Steele's face and driven home with a sledgehammer — kept the film banned in Britain until 1968, and it still lands like a door slamming. Bava shoots everything after it in silver fog and cobweb, gorgeous enough that the plot's incoherence stops mattering.
