How it scared people
The vibe
Misery relocated to a 1950s Madrid apartment, with Macarena Gómez as an agoraphobic seamstress who hasn't been outside in decades and takes in the injured neighbour from upstairs. The first hour is almost entirely repression, needlework and closed shutters — then the last half hour goes gleefully, cartoonishly wet. Álex de la Iglesia's fingerprints are all over the tonal whiplash.
