How it scared people
The vibe
King's novella handed Darabont a supermarket, a fog full of Lovecraft, and the actual subject: how quickly a frightened crowd finds itself a prophet. Marcia Gay Harden's Mrs. Carmody is worse than anything with tentacles. Darabont always preferred the black-and-white cut and he was right — find that one. People still argue about the last five minutes.
