How it scared people
The vibe
Every New Year's Eve, the last sinner to die must drive Death's cart — and Sjöström staged those spectral scenes with double exposures so patient they still read as ghostly a century on. The axe-through-a-door sequence is the one Kubrick echoed in The Shining. More temperance sermon than fright film, but the images lodge.
