How it scared people

The vibe

The opening, a father in a snowy forest with a rifle raised at the back of his small daughter's head, tells you what kind of restraint you're in for. Trier films a Norwegian student's repressed desire as a physical force that cracks glass and takes birds out of the sky. Closer to Carrie than its festival pedigree suggests, and far colder.
