The vibe
Tsui Hark produced, Ching Siu-tung directed the wirework, and the result swings from slapstick to genuine longing to a thousand-year-old tree demon whipping an impossibly long tongue through a forest. Leslie Cheung plays the world's most hapless debt collector; Joey Wong floats. Not scary so much as intoxicating — the film that taught Hong Kong horror to be beautiful.
