How it scared people
The vibe
The Pale Man gets the posters, but the scariest thing here wears a Francoist captain's uniform and winds his dead father's pocket watch — Sergi López's Vidal is one of cinema's great human monsters, and del Toro cuts his fairy-tale underworld against 1944 Spain until you can't tell which one is the escape. Gorgeous, and considerably meaner than its reputation.
