How it scared people

The vibe

Four years before Halloween, Bob Clark put the camera in the killer's eyes and then refused to name him, explain him, or show his face. The phone calls are the real weapon — layered, overlapping voices that don't sound like one person so much as a room full of them. Margot Kidder drinks through the whole thing magnificently.

Black Christmas is rated R by the MPA. We score it 4/5 for jump scares, 2/5 for gore and 4/5 for lingering dread, over 98 minutes. Very little blood — the hard part here is atmosphere and aftermath, not graphic content. Older teens and adults — less for what it shows than for how long it stays with you.
