How it scared people
The vibe
One 14-foot cube set, repainted and relit for every room — the whole film is a magic trick performed with lighting gels and a tiny Canadian budget. The opening death, a man crosshatched into pieces, arrives before you've learned anyone's name and sets the terms. Acting's rough and the prime-number logic wobbles, but the premise has never been bettered.
