How it scared people
The vibe
Three kids break into a blind veteran's house in a gutted Detroit block and discover he's the most dangerous thing in it — home invasion flipped inside out. The lights-out basement sequence, shot so you can see what the burglars can't, is a genuine formal invention. It goes somewhere ugly in the third act that some viewers never forgive.
