How it scared people
The vibe
Loosely built from the Saitama dog-kennel murders of the early nineties, with the pet shops swapped out for tropical fish. Denden's Murata is one of horror's great monsters — relentlessly cheerful, physically overwhelming, never stops talking — and the long dismemberment scenes are staged as tedious manual labour, which is far worse. Two and a half deliberately exhausting hours.
