How it scared people
The vibe
Ufa's most expensive production to date bought one indelible image: Mephisto's black wings spreading over a sleeping town until plague fills the frame. The rest is a bargain-with-the-devil melodrama that drags badly through its romance, but Emil Jannings plays the demon with a leering relish nobody has matched in a century. Murnau left for Hollywood right after.
