How it scared people

The vibe

Each chamber of Prospero's castle is drenched in a single saturated colour, photographed by a young Nicolas Roeg whose whole later career is visible in the palette. Vincent Price plays him not merely as a decadent but a practising Satanist, which gives Corman's best Poe film a genuinely blasphemous chill under the velvet.
