How it scared people
The vibe
Seventeen kids from one third-grade class walk out of their houses at 2:17 in the morning, arms out at their sides, and don't come back. Cregger tells it Magnolia-style, doubling back through a chain of perspectives so each one recontextualizes the last. Amy Madigan won an Oscar for a supporting turn that is somehow both hilarious and the worst thing in the movie.
