How it scared people

The vibe

Almost all the colour is drained out — Emmanuel Lubezki's fog is grey on grey — so that every arterial spray reads like a stain on an engraving. Christopher Walken barely speaks and files his teeth to points. The head count is enormous; the tone is closer to Hammer pastiche than to genuine fright.
